HIV/AIDS Projects

As a capacity building agency supporting the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), supported Round IV,Access to Care and Treatment project in six high prevalence states- Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Manipur and Nagaland. Enable Health Society built the capacity of more than 2,500 people that includes peer educators, health care providers, counsellors through trainings on treatment adherence, counselling and home based care. EHS developed and implemented an integrated program of training and institutional capacity building through establishing three Continuing Education & Training Centres (CETCs) for six high prevalence states.

In year 2004, Engender Health Society (currently known as Enable Health Society) played an important role in the formation of the first civil society consortium for The Global Fund that supported Round IV Access to Care and Treatment project to complement the efforts of Government of India. The Non Profit Organization consortium project was launched in 2005 with a goal to increase the number of Non Profit Organization sector providers capable of delivering high quality care and support services in accordance with the national HIV treatment guidelines in six HIV high prevalence states. During the five years duration, EHS successfully built the capacity of Non Profit Organization service providers by developing their skills to provide care and support services to people who are on HIV treatment and their families. A total of 2,441 people were trained as master trainers including peer educators, counselors, doctors and other health care workers (nurses, paramedics,) and 494 Non Profit Organization staff.

EHS developed a four -day training curricula for the peer educators and four-day curricula for counselors on treatment adherence that was translated into 5 national languages in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. EHS also translated training curriculum on home based care developed by I-Tech into four regional languages- Hindi, Marathi, Telugu and Kannada. Two job aids- a checklist for counseling on HIV treatment adherence and a counseling aid in the form of a flipchart for adherence to treatment for HIV have been developed. As part of institutional strengthening, EHS identified three institutes to be the continuing education and training centers for HIV treatment education – one at Chennai, second one at Mysore and the third at Imphal to train providers on treatment adherence from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Nagaland and Manipur and sustain the capacity building efforts of EHS.

GFATM supported Round VI project (2007-2009)

Enable Health Society also provided technical assistance for GFATM Round VI “Promoting Access to Care and Treatment “to project partners including INP+ and Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT), building capacities of 215 peer educators, counselors, healthcare workers and outreach workers in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

 

Capacity building of Teachers for Adolescent Education Program (2008)

As part of UNFPA supported “Adolescent Education Program” being implemented through CBSE in all private schools affiliated to it, Enable Health Society trained 400 teachers and conducted advocacy programs for school principals from 126 schools in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa through a CBSE-UNFPA training curricula on Adolescence Education which provides information about the process of growing up with a focus on reproductive and sexual health in its biological, psychological and socio-cultural dimensions, emotional health and coping with life skills.

Promoting Access to Care and Treatment PACT (2010- 2013)

The ACT project was given an excellent grading by the Global Fund secretariat and the Round IV consortium was invited to submit proposal for Rolling Continuation Channel. Enable Health Society was a part of consortium of local Indian Non Profit Organizations lead by Population Foundation of India that was awarded grant assistance for implementing Promoting Access to Care and Treatment (PACT) as a part of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM)which supported Rolling Continuation Channel project in nine states- Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Under the GFATM supported Promoting Access to Care and Treatment project, Enable Health Society trained 2,713 Peer Educators/Positive Speakers (PE/PS), District Project Coordinators and Support Net Officers have been trained as Master Peer Treatment Educators to deliver training on Treatment Adherence and around 450 District Level Network Staff (District Project Coordinators and Support Net Officers) and Peer Educators /Positive Speakers have been trained on facilitative supervision, male involvement in Positive Prevention and Sexual and Reproductive Health. EHS also strengthened the capacity of 4 Non Profit Organizations to function as Continuing Education and Training Centers and roll out trainings on above thematic areas.

 

Technical Assistance to Positive Women Network ( PWN+ )(2012 -15)

Enable Health Society has provided technical support to national, state and district level networks of women living with HIV through trainings on treatment adherence, sexual and reproductive health. EHS has also worked towards strengthening the organizational management of state level networks of Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and trained around 100 women living with HIV on key aspects of project and organizational management.

Enable Health Society is a key technical partner working closely with PWN+ on planning, organizing and conducting national and state level consultations for children living with/and or affected by HIV in different states of the country, building a cadre of adolescents as adolescent ambassadors to advocate for the cause of children living with and or affected by HIV.

Vihaan Project 2014

EHS provided technical assistance to the Vihaan consortium supported by GFATM and led by Alliance India and 17 state-level PLHIV networks thatmanages 350 Care & Support Centres (CSCs) across India to expand access to essential services, increase treatment adherence, reduce stigma and discrimination, and improve the quality of life of people living with HIV (PLHIV).EHS developed training curriculum for 4 thematic areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health, Positive Prevention, Psychosocial support and Treatment Adherence. EHS trained a cadre of 103 master trainers from 19 sub recipient’s across the country on thematic areas with sessions on adult learning principles, training methodologies and the skills required for planning and conducting the training.

Capacity Building of 1097- National Helpline Tele-counsellors 2014 –till date

PiramalSwasthya) launched 1097 HIV AIDS helpline service from 1st of Dec 2014 which is supported by NACP (National AIDS Control Program). EHS has conducted a training needs assessment for the team at all the 4 centers in India (Hyderabad, Guwahati, Jaipur and Solan) handling 11 languages. EHS team facilitates continuous training tailored to improve the HIV and AIDS related content for the tele-counselors. Training covers information on sexuality, gender and health, sexual and reproductive technologies and rights, the socioeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS, stigma and discrimination, and the rights of people with HIV/AIDS and also handling the information sensitively and confidentially.
